SAFIRE: ACRJ's youth organizers are on the move!

ACRJ's SAFIRE high school youth organizing program annually trains 60 young Asian women from low-income, immigrant and refugee families as leaders and organizers for reproductive justice. It's a big week for SAFIRE (Sisters in Action for Issues of Reproductive Empowerment), with several local events and raising money to send SAFIRE youth to go to the June US Social Forum in Detroit.

SAFIRE Youth Climate Justice Teach-in, March 29



Tonight, SAFIRE is hosting a Teach-in for youth on the Oakland Climate Action Plan that the Oakland City Council will consider this Tuesday. Tonight, youth will share what they have found out, what organizations in Oakland are doing to advance equitable and just climate change policies, and how youth are important to this fight.

Rally for Oakland's Energy and Climate Action Plan on Tuesday, March 30



Oakland could have the best plan in the nation to fight global warming if it passes the Energy and Climate Action Plan proposal developed by the Oakland Climate Action Coalition, which includes ACRJ and over forty other community organizations, unions, green businesses and environmental experts and advocates. SAFIRE Youth Going to the US Social Forum!



The June US Social Forum, the convening that will bring together thousands of organizers from the U.S. and global social movements in Detroit, is an incredible opportunity for SAFIRE youth members to learn, educate other youth and expand their political awareness.

SAFIRE in the 2010 Guerilla Youth Theatre Project, April 2-3



SAFIRE youth, along with youth from all over Oakland, are part of the Guerrilla Youth Theater Project of the EastSide Arts Alliance. American Deco is a collaborative piece, written and acted by over 60 Oakland youth, which includes SAFIRE's contribution focusing on gentrification and climate justice.
"While the powerful media corporation American Deco gets rich off exploiting communities, an underground guerilla movement builds in Oakland. We take a trip into the inner workings of American Deco. What keeps this corporation running, and what are the guerillas willing to do to protect their communities?"
